About this plant
Bougainvillea is the flowering vine you see spilling over walls and balconies across Mexico, Brazil and the Caribbean, known as buganvilia, Santa Rita or trinitaria. Its bright paper-like bracts cover the plant for most of the warm season.
Scientific name: Bougainvillea spp.
- Bright bracts in your choice of color, or a mixed pack
- Climbs a trellis or fence, or can be kept as a shrub or bonsai in a large pot
- Loves full sun and heat, and tolerates dry spells once established
- Step-by-step growing guide included in every order
How to grow
- Soak the seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours.
- Sow 0.5 cm deep in light, well-drained mix and keep at 22–30°C.
- Keep the soil lightly moist. Seedlings usually appear in 3–6 weeks.
- Move to full sun once the seedlings have a few true leaves. Protect from frost.
Good to know: bougainvillea grown from seed is a long-term project. Plants usually take 1–3 years to flower, and flower color can vary from the parent plant.
Shipping note: some countries only allow seeds in with an import permit. In Chile (SAG) and Argentina (SENASA), customs may hold seed parcels sent to private buyers. Please check your local rules before ordering.
